Postherpetic Neuralgia (also knows as pain after shingles, or abbreviated PHN) is a painful condition affecting nerve fibers and skin. It is a complication of Shingles, which is caused by the chickenpox virus. If pain persists for more than a month after the Shingles outbreak, PHN is diagnosed. The pain is described as aching, stabbing, burning, or feeling like an electric shock in the areas where Shingles once occured.

Postherpetic Neuralgia is most frequently found in people over 60 and affects men and women equally.
Symptoms of PHN may include the following:

⚫ Pain in the area where Shingles occured ⚫ Sensititivity to even light touch
⚫ Numbness or itching (rare) ⚫ Weakness or paralysis (rare)
